It is in the Competitive Presentation that dance groups
and schools from all over Brazil - and abroad - join together
to show their work to a public of more than 4 thousand
people per night. There are eight nights of Competitive
Presentation, with works enrolled in seven classes: Classical
Repertoire Ballet, Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance,
Jazz, Street Dance, Popular Dances and Tap Dance, subdivided
into three categories: junior, senior and advanced. Participants
in the Competitive Presentation are selected by the Artistic
Committee of the Joinville Dance Festival Institute and,
during the presentations, are evaluated by renowned judges
from Brazil and overseas. The winners of each class take
the stage again on the Night of the Champions.
1st Article - Selection
In order to enroll and participate in the Competitive
Presentation at the Joinville Dance Festival, candidates
must undergo a prior selection process, with the exception
of first place winners in the 2005 event, who are assured
the right to return in accordance with the 7th Article
of these regulations.
A) To participate in the selection, groups must
send the following material to the Joinville Dance Festival
Institute, via courier, by 18 April 2006 (proof of posting
according to date on stamp):
- Copy of CNPJ (General Taxpayers Register) card, for
schools or dance academies, or Term of Independent Group,
for groups not linked to dance schools or academies.
- Notarized photocopy of ID card, Passport or Driver's
License (required for each group member). It must be emphasized
that the JDFI will only accept the above mentioned documents
as proof of identity.
- Document corroborating release by the choreographer,
issued by SBAT or by the choreographer him/herself.
- Recording of choreography (in DVD or video tape - VHS,
NTSC system).
Important: Choreographies enrolled in different classes,
sub classes and categories must be separate (note enrollment
limits, according to following observations).
Examples:
Tape 1 - Classical Ballet - Group (Junior) - maximum of
3 choreographies
Tape 2 - Classical Ballet - Male Solo (Junior) - maximum
of 3 choreographies
Tape 3 - Classical Ballet - Female Solo (Junior) - maximum
of 3 choreographies
Tape 4 - Classical Ballet - Duet (Junior) - maximum of
3 choreographies
Tape 5 - Classical Ballet - Trio (Junior) - maximum of
3 choreographies
The above example applies to all categories (Junior, Senior
and Advanced), as well as other classes and sub classes.
Observation
- Each school/academy can enroll up to 3 different groups,
with each group being able to enroll a total of 10 works
for each selection, respecting the limit of up to 3 choreographies
per class/sub-class;
- Independent groups (those not linked to dance schools/academies)
can enroll up to 10 works for the selection, respecting
the limit of up to 3 choreographies per class/sub-class;
- In the selection, up to 3 choreographies per group can
be approved for participating in the Festival, including
all the classes and sub-classes;
- Verification of all documentation, including that of
the participants, will be performed during the selection
process;
- Concerning participant enrollments, the names and ages
of all dancers must be listed, with the group being permitted
four additional members, to be chosen among: director,
coordinator (who must have completed 18 years of age by
the beginning of the event) and choreographer or rehearser;
- Dancers can participate in costume for the taping, with
the exception of classical Ballet and Classical Repertoire
Ballet choreographies, when rehearsal clothes are recommended;
- Choreographies enrolled in the selection cannot be altered
for the event presentation, and nor will alterations to
the name of the choreography, time or music be accepted
Disqualification criteria
Any groups/schools sending their works/choreographies
with the following irregularities will be DISQUALIFIED:
- incomplete enrollment form;
- lack of any group or group member document;
- postage date exceeding stipulated date;
- tape not rewound;
- Video/DVD without identification, with technical sound
problems, or containing other images such as parties,
films, soap operas etc.;
- Recordings done in parts, in more than one locality,
or with any type of assembly/editing;
- Lack of author identification concerning the choreographical
reassembly/version of Classical Repertoire Ballets;
- Incomplete choreographies
- Enrollment of more choreographies than the number stimulated
in these regulations (see above notes)
Criteria for Selection assessment
Classical Repertoire Ballet
- Artistic and technical quality of the performers
- Adaptation of the chosen pieces for the dancers
- Faithfulness to the proposed version
Other classes
- Artistic and technical quality of the performers
- Structure of the choreographic composition
- Adequate development of the proposed theme
A) The selection result will be divulged within
45 days following selection enrollment deadline, on the
Festival site, and sent to the press.
Observations
- No results will be given over the telephone.
- Judges do not issue written commentaries on the choreographies
enrolled in the selection.
Important: material sent for the selection will not
be returned
2nd Article - Enrollment
The groups approved in the selection must confirm
their enrollment in the event by10/06/2006. Once enrollment
has been confirmed, the group must send the following
documents to the Dance Festival Institute, via courier:
- 1 (one) 3x4 photo (dated same year as the event) of
each member, with the name in block letters on the back,
for the ID tag;
- Copy of the enrollment form of each choreography enrolled
in the Competitive Presentation;
- A copy of a document proving that enrollment fee has
been paid.
Important: Groups with works approved in the Competitive
Presentation and that wish to participate in the Open
Stages must confirm their presence through the Open Stages
link.
Observations
- Should there be any alterations to the cast appearing
in the tape selection, the group must provide a justification
in writing of any alteration occurring in any phase of
the selection process, from selection up to the group's
presentation at the event;
- If the event's Coordinating Committee is not informed
of this, the group will be barred from presenting;
- Cast alterations can only occur in group choreographies
(involving a maximum of 10% of the cast), and are not
permitted in Variations, Pas-de-Deux, Grand Pas-de-Deux,
Pas-de-Trois, solos, duets and trios;
- Participants may not perform in different groups, should
they do so they will be disqualified.
A) Enrollment fee
The value of the enrollment fee is R$ 40.00 (forty reals)
per participant in each enrolled group, including coordinator,
director, choreographer or rehearser.
3rd Article - Classes
Enrollments for the Competitive Presentation of the Joinville
Dance Festival will be divided into seven classes: Classical
Repertoire Ballet, Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance,
Jazz, Street Dance, Popular Dances and Tap Dance.
A) Classical Repertoire Ballet, presented in the
following sub classes
1. Male Variation
2. Female Variation
3. Pas-de-Deux (only in Junior category, without variations
or duet)
4. Grand Pas-de-Deux (only in Senior and Advanced categories,
with Pas-de-Deux, variations and duet).
5. Pas-de-Trois
6. Group. Time: up to 12 minutes
Important
1 - The choice of Repertoire choreographies (Variations,
Pas-de-Deux, Grand Pas-de-Deux, Pas-de-Trois and Group)
comes under the responsibility of the schools and groups
(respecting the period, style and appropriate costumes),
in accordance with the technical level of the participants.
The repertoire choreographies must be as faithful as possible.
In case of doubt we suggest you consult with recognized
masters or research versions from the Kirov, Bolshoi,
Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet,
Royal Ballet of Denmark and the Australian Ballet. In
the case of choreographers such as Balanchine, John Cranco
and Kenneth McMillan, among others, whose works are not
yet considered public domain, participation will depend
on presentation of a document issued by the entity representing
the choreographer officially releasing the work. If this
document is not presented at the time of selection, the
choreography will be automatically disqualified.
Observations: the dancer presented as an invited
partner (non competitor) also also pays an enrollment
fee and will not be eligible to perform with any other
school/academy.
B) Classical Ballet, presented in the following
sub classes
1. Solo. Time: up to 3 minutes
2. Duet. Time: up to 4 minutes
3. Trio. Time: up to 4 minutes
4. Group. Time: up to 6 minutes
- Created or reassembled choreographies will be enrolled
in this class, adhering to the Classical Ballet technique
C) Contemporary Dance, is only presented in the
Senior and Advanced categories, in the following sub classes
1. Solo. Time: up to 3 minutes
2. Duet. Time: up to 4 minutes
3. Trio. Time: up to 4 minutes
4. Group. Time: Senior - up to 6 minutes - and Advanced
- 8 minutes.
- Works following the lines of the Modern Dance schools
(Graham, Limón, Cunningham etc.) and/or Contemporary
Dance works (Dance - Theater, Butoh, Multimedia etc.)
will be enrolled in this class.
D) Jazz, presented in categories: Junior, Senior
and Advanced
Group. Time: Junior - up to 5 minutes; Senior - up to
6 minutes; Advanced - up to 8 minutes.
- All Jazz lines, including those involving contemporary
dance and musicals, will be enrolled in this class.
E) Street Dance
Group. Time: up to 5 minutes
- All variations of the Hip Hop, Funk and Break lines
will be enrolled in this class. F) Popular
Dances
Group. Time: up to 5 minutes
- All popular urban dances (tango, samba, bolero, forró
etc.), character dances inspired by folklore and ethnic
dances will be enrolled in this class.
Important: Popular dances that are part of a Classical
Repertoire Ballet must be enrolled in Classical Repertoire
Ballet and not in Popular Dances. G) Tap
Dance
Group. Time: up to 5 minutes
- All types of Tap Dance will be enrolled in this class,
except those connected to ethnic dance (Irish and Spanish,
among others). 4th Article - Categories
Enrollments in the Competitive Presentation at the Joinville
Dance Festival can be done in three categories.
Junior (born in 1991, 1992 or 1993)
Senior (born in 1989, 1990 or 1991)
Advanced (born in 1989 - or before)
Important:
- A dancer can participate in different categories, so
long as his/her birthday falls within the chosen category
(see above table);
- In the case of senior or advanced group presentations,
enrollments will only be accepted from dancers whose birth
date coincides with the category immediately below.
- In the junior category enrollments will only be accepted
from participants whose birth date is within the category.
- We recommend that the groups pay special attention to
the age of their members enrolled in the selection, as
no changes in category will be permitted after selection
has been closed. Technical observations
1) In all classes of the event, "Group"
participation is limited to a minimum of 4 (four) and
a maximum of 50 (fifty) members. 2) Choreographies
will be timed during the presentation. If the presentation
exceeds the stipulated time the group will de DISQUALIFIED.
In the case of technical problems during the presentation,
there will be a time allowance of 15 seconds, in addition
to the time of the choreography. 3) The rotunda
branca will be used as the standard in the Classical Repertoire
Ballet class and sub-class, and for the Classical Ballet
class and sub-classes, the rotunda branca will be optional.
4) To prove the faithfulness of the choreography
approved in the selection, a professional will accompany
the videos sent for the selection during the competition.
5) Groups must state, on the selection enrollment
form, the type of props that will be used in the presentation,
considering that presentations are not permitted with
the following:
- Children born in 1996 or later;
- Any live animal.
- Water and fire, or objects that could jeopardize or
damage the stage or reach the audience. Any group using
unauthorized material will be DISQUALIFIED. 6)
Lighting and sound configurations will be the same
for all participants. 7) Participants must
bring two CDs or MDs for each musical item to be performed.
The reproduction must be without interference such as
applause or abrupt cuts. The CDs or MDs must be labeled
(including the box) and given to the person responsible
for stage rehearsals. The CDs/MDs will be handed to the
event producer for the stage rehearsal and will only be
returned to the group at the end of the night's presentations.
For presentations on Alternative Stages and/or extra rehearsals,
the group must provide other CDs/MDs. 8) Each
participant or group must be present one hour before the
time scheduled for their presentation. 9) Each
group must have two people responsible for fulfilling
the following tasks:
- To be present at the sound and light controls during
the presentation, failure to do so will result in the
group's DISQUALIFICATION.
- To accompany the group in the dressing rooms and when
entering and exiting the stage.
10) The following conditions will apply to dressing
room occupation:
- These must be vacated as soon as the presentation is
concluded so that the next group can occupy them immediately.
- Dressing room entrance order will follow that of stage
entrance.
- The organizers are not responsible for any objects left
in the dressing rooms. 11) Images of participating
groups can be used at the discretion of the Coordination
Committee for divulging the event. 5th
Article - Rehearsals A) Stage Rehearsals
- The rehearsals for competitive presentations will be
held at the Centreventos Cau Hansen, on the day of the
presentation;
- The order of rehearsals and stage presentations will
be determined by the Festival Coordinating Committee;
- The group coordinator must appear on the stage at the
time of the rehearsal;
- Regarding stage rehearsal, each participating group/school
will have double the duration of its choreography plus
5 (five) minutes;
- Sound and light technicians will accompany stage rehearsals
in order to help groups use the available resources.
B) Extra Rehearsals
The Festival Coordinating Committee will supply venues
for participating groups to conduct extra rehearsals,
with the group being responsible for the following:
- Confirmation of the schedule for these rehearsals at
the Secretary's office, on the group's arrival in Joinville.
- Transport to the rehearsal location.
- Supplying sound equipment for its rehearsal.
- Taking care of security, cleaning and conservation of
the venue.
6th Article - Competitive Presentation
A) Judges
The works enrolled in the Competitive Presentation will
be analyzed by a panel of judges, composed of five recognized
members of the dance world. Members of the panel may not
have any direct professional connections with any schools,
academies or groups competing in the presentation.
B) Classification
The following criteria will be adopted for work classification:
1st Place - highest average above 9.0.
2nd Place - average immediately below that of 1st place,
above 8.0.
3rd Place - average immediately below that of 2nd place,
above 7.0. C) Announcement of Results
Prizewinners will be publicly announced daily, within
30 minutes of the end of the spectacle, on the stage in
the Dance Slipper Fair. The scores and comments will be
available to the group leader on the day following the
presentation, from 10 am onwards, at the Secretary's office.
D) Meeting with judges
Every day at 11am, the event's Coordinating Committee
will conduct a meeting between the groups that competed
in the previous night's class and the respective members
of the judging panel. On this occasion, the judges will
deliver their comments on each group/choreography.
7th Article - Prizes
A) The Joinville Dance Festival will present
trophies and certificates to the first, second and third
place winners in each category and class in the Competitive
Presentation.
- All prizewinners must appear before the Festival Coordinating
Committee on the morning following the presentation to
receive instructions concerning the presentation of their
trophies. First prize winning groups will give a presentation
and receive their trophies on the Night of the Champions
(29 July). Any group that is unable to participate in
the Night of the Champions must provide the Coordinating
Committee with justification for this, within 24 hours
of the announcement of the results; otherwise it will
forfeit the right to return the following year.
- Second and third prize winning groups will give a presentation
and receive their trophies on the following day, at 15:00,
on the stage at the Dance Slipper Fair.
As a form of motivation as well as a prize, first place
groups in the Competitive Presentation will receive free
accommodation and two food vouchers per day, for each
cast member in the winning group - during the period between
the Competitive night and the final night of the event,
when the Night of the Champions takes place. This benefit
will only be made available to those groups confirming
their participation in the Night of the Champions. If
the group is accommodated in a hotel it may transfer to
the accommodation provided by the Festival so long as
it provides its own mattresses and bed clothing. If the
group chooses to remain at the hotel, then it will be
responsible for its own expenses, with the Institute,
in this case, only providing the food vouchers. In the
case of a group winning more than one first place prize,
there will only be 2 vouchers per day, for each member
of the prize winning cast. The food vouchers and authorization
to use the accommodation will be available at the Secretary's
office on the morning following the presentation, after
10:00.
C) Special prizes
Participants from the Competitive Presentation are also
eligible to receive special prizes, as decided by the
Judging Committee, which is composed of 11 professionals,
with 4 members from the Artistic Committee and 7 judges
(a representative from each class), whose responsibility
it is to observe the Competitive Presentation and to select,
during the event, candidates for Dance Festival Special
Prizes, and finally, decide the winners of the following
prizes:
1) Best Group
Certificate, trophy and prize to the value of R$ 15,000.00
(fifteen thousand reals) for all categories of the Competitive
Presentation of the Joinville Dance Festival (junior,
senior or advanced).
2) Choreographer - Discovery
Certificate and a one-week trip overseas, to participate
in an event related to the chosen professional's area.
3) Best Male Dancer
Gold medal and prize of R$ 5,000.00 (five thousand reals)
for the best dancer of all categories and classes of the
Festival.
4) Best Female Dancer/ Miriam Toigo Trophy
Gold medal, Trophy and prize of R$ 5,000.00 (five thousand
reals) for the best female dancer of all categories and
classes of the event.
Miriam Toigo - Born in Porto Alegre (RS), went to Russia
at the age of 24 where she lived for 8 years. She graduated
from the Vaganova School, in Leningrad, and went on to
dance with the Kirov and Bolshoi ballet companies. She
continued her career in the United States, dancing with
the New York Metropolitan Theater from 1982 to 86. In
the beginning of 1990, just as Miriam was making plans
to return to dancing in Brazil, her dream came to a sudden
end on March 12 of that year, with her untimely death
in a fatal accident in New York.
5) Discovery Prize
Gold medal and prize to the value of R$ 5,000.00 (five
thousand reals) for the Discovery of the event. NOTE:
this prize can be awarded to a male/female dancer, group,
school, costume designer, rehearser or others (except
choreographer).
Important
- All 1st prize winning groups from the 2006 Festival
have the right to participate in the 2007 event.
Executive activities
1 - Reception
Participants will be received at the Secretary's office,
inside the Centreventos Cau Hansen, from 19th July onwards,
between 08:00 and 20:00 (office hours throughout event).
2 - ID Tags
Each event participant will receive a personalized name
tag, for personal use, which is non transferable and must
be worn at all times, and which, under no circumstances
whatsoever, may be used by third parties, the penalty
for which will be confiscation by Coordinating Committee.
Access to lodgings and backstage, (warm up rooms, dressing
rooms, wings, house mix and stage) during the group rehearsal
and stage presentation will not be permitted without the
name tag. The participant's name tag does not include
free access to spectacles except on the days of the participant's
competitive presentations.
3 - Certificates
Each event participant will receive a certificate of participation.
4 - Tickets for participants
- Participants must acquire tickets for the spectacles
they wish to attend;
- On the night of the group's presentation, the participants
will have access to the event (level 2 stalls) via the
access ramp exclusive for participants, on showing identification
(name tag) at the entrance to the event;
- Festival Coordinating Committee will provide special
tickets in the stalls - for event participants only -
for the 8 nights of presentation in the Competitive Presentation
of the Joinville Dance Festival. Tickets will be on sale
(through the event site), from 26th to 30th June 2006.
Ticket sales for the general public commence on 3rd July.
- Detailed information concerning ticket sales will be
available on the site www.festivaldedanca.com.br, from
May 2006 onwards.
Important
- Those with special tickets must present their participant
name tag
together with their ticket at the entrance to the spectacle.
Participant tickets may only be used by people enrolled
in the Festival.
5 - Exceptions
Any exceptions to these regulations will be resolved by
the JDFI Coordinating Committee.
