Presentation
The 21st Joinville Dance Festival, to be held from July 17
to 27, 2003, brings with it some new concepts concerning the
competitive exhibition, aimed at providing the presentation
with more technical quality. There has been a noticeable improvement
in the artistic quality of the presentation (partly due to
the care taken in selecting the groups), but little concern,
on the part of the competing groups, concerning questions
of stage occupation, choice of soundtrack, costumes, scenery
and lighting.
These comments were analyzed by the Festival's Consulting
Council, during the planning meeting held in Joinville, in
October 2002. This meeting resulted in changes to the regulations
and, more importantly, a greater involvement in the Festival
on the part of the Council members in relation to the groups
and presentations that make up the competitive presentation
program.
Notable among the direct actions were:
1 - The insertion of detailed technical information about
the structure of the stage (sound and lighting), available
to the groups dancing in the arena of the Centreventos Cau
Hansen and in the Juarez Machado Theater. This action is aimed
at stimulating the choreographers and coordinators of the
participating groups to use these resources in their presentations.
2 - Stage rehearsals will be accompanied by a member of the
Consulting Council, who will be responsible for giving the
groups guidance about stage occupation as well as the sound
and lighting resources.
3 - In addition to the sound technician, there will also be
two lighting technicians available during the stage rehearsals
to help the choreographers and coordinators of the participating
groups with the lighting for their presentations.
These actions are also for the purpose of stimulating choreographers,
teachers and coordinators of the dance groups to seek not
just technical improvement in the dance itself but also concerning
questions related to the choreographic composition and other
multidisciplinary subjects such as interpretation, scenery
and lighting, among others. Another objective is to share
experiences within the different areas in the field of culture
such as theater, music, circus, arts, folklore etc.
Council members also constantly looking out for changes,
or for the lack of them, in questions related to the modalities,
which make up the Festival competitive presentation. Some
of these modalities, such as Street Dance, Tap Dance and Modern
Dance are showing signs of maturing, growing and are seeking
new languages. On the other hand, Jazz needs to be deeply
looked into by the professionals in this area. And with this
in mind and with the objective of contributing to this work,
the Festival will hold a round table for the purpose of trying
to understand the future of Jazz in Brazil, on July 22.
These are some relevant points concerning the 2003 Regulations,
which will only be available in digital format (the same applies
to all enrollment forms for the event).
It must be emphasized, however, that the enrollment deadline
for selection in the 21st Dance Festival, 4th Half Point Festival,
3rd Modern Dance Exhibition and Alternative Stages is April
4, 2003, and the result of the selection will be made public
at the end of May 2003.
Coordination
Joinville (SC), November 2002.

21st Joinville Dance Festival (July 17 to 27, 2003), the 4th

| Grupo Expressar de Sete
Lagoas |
1st Article - Selection
To enroll in the 21st Joinville Dance Festival (JDF), the
candidate must submit to a pre-selection, with the exception
of those groups winning 1st place in the 20th JDF, whose right
of return is guaranteed according to 7th
Article of the Festival Regulations.
A) To participate in the selection,
the groups must send the following material to the Joinville
Dance Festival Institute, via express post, no later than
April 4, 2003:
- Enrollment
Form filled in by the choreographer giving a list
of the cast.

enrolled in one same modality; if the tape contains more than
just one work, it must have a label with the name of the choreographies
in the order in which they were recorded.
Important:
the choreographies enrolled in the different modalities must
be recorded on different tapes. For example: the Jazz
and Ballet choreographies must be on separate tapes, but enrollments
for Female Variation and Classical Repertoire Ballet Group
can be on the same tape as they belong to the Classical Repertoire.
- An authenticated copy of the ID card of each group member.
Observation: Birth certificates
will only be accepted in the case of enrollments for the Half
Point Festival.
- Document releasing the choreographer, issued by SBAT or
by the choreographer her/himself.
- Copy of the groups' tax contribution number.
Observations
- On the tape the dancers should be attired in rehearsal clothing
and not in the costumes to be used for the performance.
- The choreography enrolled for the selection cannot be altered
for the Festival performance. Furthermore, alterations to
the names of the choreography will not be accepted.
- Groups sending in incomplete or illegible enrollment forms,
or documentation will be disqualified.
B) The result of the selection
will be made public at the end of May 2003, on a date to be
set by the board of the Institute, as follows:
- The list of the selected works and the names of the groups
will be posted on the Festival site and sent to Brazilian
press outlets.
- The individual score of each group will only be given over
Internet. (Important: give the e-mail of your group on the
enrollment form.) - Results will not be given over the telephone.
- Judges comments on the choreographies of the participants
in the selection will not be made available.
- In the case of various works by the same group being selected,
only the works with the three highest scores will participate
in the Festival - the others being automatically disqualified
- in accordance with the criteria permitting the participation
of only one choreography, per group, in the same modality/category.
Important
Tapes sent for selection will not be returned.
2nd Article - Enrollment
The groups approved in the selection will have to get their
enrollment forms,
as well as the instructions for completing enrollment.
A) The following deadlines will
apply to enrollments
- For prize winning groups in the 20th JDF: April
4, 2003
- For selected groups: June 6, 2003
- Only enrollments with a postage date within the stipulated
deadlines will be accepted.
B) An enrollment form should
be filled in for each choreography,.
Observations
- There can be no modifications to the data on the enrollment
form once it is been delivered to the Festival Coordination.
- Only the forms that have been correctly filled in will be
accepted (typed and without erasures).
- Forms filled in by hand will not be accepted.
C) Concerning participant enrollment
forms, the names and ages of all dancers must be listed, and
the group may be accompanied by up to four more members, to
be chosen among: director, coordinator, choreographer or rehearser,
all of whom must have completed the age
of 18 years by April 04, 03.
Observations
- Should there be any alteration to the names in the cast
in the tape selection, the group must justify, in writing,
the alteration performed in any phase of the selection process,
up to the presentation of the group at the Festival.
- If the event coordination is not notified of this occurrence,
the group is subject to being disqualified from the Festival.
- Cast alterations may only be performed in group choreographies,
and not in variations, solos, duos, trios, Pas-de-Deux, Grand
Pas-de-Deux and Pas-de-Trois.
D) Should participants be found
performing in two different groups, they will be disqualified.
E) Documents required for enrollment:
- 1 (one) recent 3x4 photo of each participant, with the name
written in the same way as for the ID tag, which will be issued
on enrollment acceptance.
- Proof of having deposited the enrollment fee (according
to item F), except in the case of groups from other countries,
who must pay the enrollment in cash (R$) on their arrival
in Joinville, at the secretary's office, before collecting

publicity.
F) Enrollment fee:
The value of the enrollment fee for the 21st Joinville Dance
Festival is R$ 40.00 (forty reals) per enrolled group participant,

3rd Article - Modalities
Enrollments for the 21st Joinville Dance Festival will be
divided into seven modalities: Classical Repertoire Ballet,
Classical Ballet, Modern Dance, Jazz, Street Dance, Popular
Dances and Tap Dancing.
A) Classical Repertoire Ballet
is presented in the following forms:
1. Male Variation
2. Female Variation
3. Pas-de-Deux (only in Junior category, without variations
and code)
4. Pas-de-Trois
5. Grand Pas-de-Deux (only in Senior and Advanced categories,
with Pas-de-Deux, variations and code).
6. Group. Time: up to 8 minutes
Important
1 - The choice of Repertoire choreographies (Variations, Pas-de-Deux,
Grand Pas-de-Deux, Pas-de-Trois and Group) is the responsibility
of the school and groups (respecting period, style and suitable
costumes), according to the technical level of the participants.
The repertoire choreographies must be presented in the truest
form possible. We suggest you consult recognized masters or
research versions of Kirov, Bolshoi Ballets, Royal Ballet,
American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish
Ballet and Australian Ballet Companies. In the case of choreographers
such as Balanchine, John Cranco and Kenneth McMillan, among
others, whose works are still not considered public dominion,
participation will depend on the presentation of a document
releasing the choreographer issued by the entity officially
representing said choreographer. If this document is not presented
at the time of selection, the group will not be permitted
to perform in this modality/category.
2 - In the case of Pas-de-Deux and Grand Pas-de-Deux presentation,
only one of the partners can be enrolled and evaluated, according
to school criteria. Thus, it is possible for a dancer enrolled
in the Senior category, for example, to dance with someone
from another category. In this case, the male partner will
not be evaluated by the judging panel, and cannot compete
in any other presentation, category or modality and is not
eligible for any prize given at the event. However, this will
only be permitted if the organization is duly notified at
the moment of selection/enrollment.
Observation
The dancer presented as an invited partner (not competitor)
must also pay the enrollment fee and cannot be participating
with any other school/group.

in the following ways:
1. Solo. Time: up to 3 minutes
2. Duet. Time: up to 4 minutes
3. Trio. Time: up to 4 minutes

- The created or reassembled choreographies will be enrolled
in the modality, obeying the academic choreographic structure
of the Classical or Neoclassical Ballet.
