The Festival
The largest event for dance students in Latin America, the
Joinville Dance Festival relies on a varied program, including
presentations by renowned companies, courses, demonstrations,
open-air stages, parallel attractions and competitions. This
range of activities planned for the 21st edition will be held
from July 17 - 27 and will once again transform Joinville
into the Brazilian dance capital, attracting some 4000 participants.
Throughout the Dance Festival, approximately 50,000 people
will watch performances at the Centreventos Cau Hansen and
at the Juarez Machado Theater. Promoted by the Joinville Dance
Festival Institute, the event is carried out with the support
of its sponsors, the Patronage Laws of the Ministry of Culture,
and the State (Santa Catarina) Cultural Foundation, as well
as through its own resources obtained through ticket sales
and enrollments.
The Program
In this 21st edition, all of the elements that are found
in the major work of art painted by artist Juarez Machado
located at the entrance of Centreventos and that constitute
various facets of the art form will be brought together on
stage during the Joinville Dance Festival at the Centreventos
Cau Hansen. This will be seen with the arrival of the performance,
"The Great Mystical Circus", by the Ballet do Teatro
Guaíra, from Curitiba, which opens the Festival on
July 17th.
On Gala Night (07/22), it will be Salvador's Balé
Teatro Castro Alves' turn to show two of its great performances
to Joinville Dance Festival audiences. The last day of the
event, the 27th, will be the Night of Champions, which will
bring back to the stage the winning compositions of competition
night contestants, classified into seven different modalities:
Classical Repertoire Ballet, Classical Ballet, Contemporary
Dance, Jazz, Street Dance, Popular Dance, and Tap Dance, sub-divided
into junior, senior, and advanced categories.
In addition to the special and competition nights, the 21st
Joinville Dance Festival will offer the following parallel
events:
Contemporary Dance Demonstration
- Launched in 2001, this non-competitive demonstration received
wide acclaim from both the public and critics. This event
is devoted to professional dancers and groups who work with
dance production, using new languages, mixed techniques or
experimental stage techniques, without esthetic or time limitations.
It is held over four nights.
Half Point Festival - Created
in 2000, this event is designed for children aged 10 to 12
years, and lasts for three afternoons. The competition includes
Classical Repertoire Ballet, Classical Ballet and Popular
Dance modalities.
Alternative Stages - various
group performances are presented throughout the Festival on
official stages set up in squares, shopping centers and companies.
These participants also undergo a selection, adding to the
standard of these presentations which the public enjoys free
of charge.
Didactic program - There are
25 different course and workshop options with renowned teachers.
The program is conducted in partnership with the Joinville
Regional University and those participating in two modules
receive "University Extension" certification. This
year, the courses and workshops will no longer be held at
Univille but at three venues near the center of Joinville:
Casa da Cultura, the old Town Hall and the Antarctica Cultural
Complex. The fact that these locations are central allows
participants greater involvement with the city and the organizational
structure of the Festival, located in the Centreventos Cau
Hansen.
